Out of this World: The Planet Orient

FFM00001B0 Planet Orient.Still028Today we are looking back at a classic model that some of you might have forgotten, the Planet Orient FFM00001B0.

The Planet Orient is a sport watch with a diver watch influence.

But first off, lets start off with the heart of the watch, the movement. Powering the FFM00001B is the Orient in house caliber 46U40 movement (also found in the Orient Conductor), which incorporates three lumed hands for time, a power reserve indicator at the 12 o’clock position and a date subdial at the 6 o’clock position. This movement is housed in a stainless steel case that is 44.5mm in diameter and is mounted on a stainless steel bracelet using solid 22mm end links.

The key features which helped classify the Plant Orient as a sport watch is the font and inner tachymeter bezel. The lumed font used is very sporty arabic numerals for the 12, 2, 4, 8, 10 hour markers and dashes for the 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 hour markers. The use of the tachymeter inner bezel is very indicative of a sport watch, which is used to measure speed distance.

The diver influence comes from the 100m depth rating, screwed-down crown, and unidirectional bezel. Out of necessity, diver watches are always required high water resistance in order to properly function. The Planet Orient is no different with its 100m depth rating and screwed-down crown to further protect the movement from water. It also has a unidirectional bezel which is used to measure elapsed time, another key feature of a diver watch, incorporated into the case.

Clearly the sport influence dominates the watch, but the combination of these two different categories of watch makes for a very unique and multifunctional piece.[gallery ids="3346,3349,3348,3347,3345,3344,3343,3342,3341"]
